Coach Luis Casillas has been part of the Oceanside Breakers family since 1990. He started out playing in our recreational program and then at U12, continued onto our competitive program under coach Victor Herrera. After completing his soccer career at Oceanside High School, Luis chose to give back to the club that had given him so much, and started to coach.
In 1997, Luis was a trainer for the Oceanside Breakers, he then took on the head coaching role of a boys U12 team. Throughout the years he has coached on both the boys and girls side of our club. Luis is also the head coach at El Camino High. He took over the program in 2011.
Currently, he is the head coach of the Oceanside Breakers G03 Black team. Coach Luis has this to say about his girls, “Our age bracket certainly benefited from the age matrix. As most newly formed teams, we got off to a slow start. The girls quickly realized we needed to step up, not only the quality, but the quantity of our training sessions to compete in Coast Soccer League – GOLD. The girls have incorporated a fitness day, and run 5 miles a week on top of their normal training sessions.” Luis also credits the parents for trusting his coaching and commitment to the training sessions, along with seeking extra work for their daughters with personal private training. As far as the future goes for Coach Luis and his G03 team, he wants these girls to continue to play well and represent Oceanside, with the option to play at the college level. He believes all the girls have the capability and potential to play at the next level, should that be the route they want to take.
Developing our kids
Luis also plays a big role in recreational side of our club. He is head of our recreational development program, and oversees the recreational development coordinators. “The rec development program is essential to the growth of our club. It keeps our grassroots foundation, which in turn fosters new players, and coaches.” Luis goes on to state, “The rec development program is my new baby. I believe the program is essential to our clubs stability and growth.”
Coach Frank Zimmerman, Director of Coaching, has had the pleasure to know Luis, and his family for quite some time. He has this to say of his coach, “Luis Casillas started coaching right out of high school, while playing for me at Oceanside High School, where he was the captain of his Pirate teams. Luis showed the ability to study the game at a young age, and has developed into a fine coach and valuable member of our staff. He has coached at OHS, RBVHS, and of course his current role as head coach at El Camino. Luis has certainly given back to his club and community.”
“Oceanside is where you can really be part of a family.”
I asked Luis, what keeps him in Oceanside, his response, “simple, the kids, the families. Take the Ozuna’s for example, while I have Alina and Alyssa at ECHS, I currently have their youngest sister, Alexys, on my G03 Black team. Watching them all grow, and then continue onto high school with me is pretty cool!” Luis finishes off by saying, “Oceanside is where you can really be part of a family.”
Currently, Luis has 3 daughters who have either played, or are currently playing for the Oceanside Breakers. His nephew also plays for the Oceanside Breakers, his sister is a team manager, and his dad, is also a Oceanside Breakers coach. So as you can see, family and soccer are 2 things that run deep in his life.
